Dr. K, as she’s known here, sees education as a continuous cycle in which she teaches so that she can learn and wants to keep learning so that she can teach more. A memorable experience was a graduate course in protein structures; it made an impression because the content was fascinating and imparted by an exceptionally engaging professor. It shaped how she thinks about teaching and the power of inspiring instruction. Dr. K’s classes challenge students to not just conduct labs to find answers but to devise their own labs and see what answers turn up. In the math classroom, that often looks like grappling with a problem for a while before engaging with a solution that truly makes sense. That process of discovery is what excites her most about science and mathematics. In her free time, Dr. K loves to hike with her friends, travel with her husband and children, or find a new K-drama to watch.
