Bay's 20th Anniversary

Celebrate this milestone with us!

The Bay School welcomed its first class of students in the fall of 2004, and we joyously kicked off our 20th year with a Toast to Bay in August! This will be a year of joy and celebration.

It is not easy to build a school from scratch, especially one brave enough to buck conventional wisdom in service of something unique and special: a high school that is guided by the essential question, what skills and habits of mind and heart will today’s students need decades from now? From day one, Bay has never lost sight of its north star.

To all those who have ridden the waves with us: THANK YOU. We truly would not be here without your belief in our mission.

And now, let’s get down to the business of celebrating. In addition to the events listed below, there will be some athletic matchups between current Bay teams and alumni plus at least one tailgate party! Stay tuned for further announcements and event details.

What's New, What's Next

In 2019, Bay rolled out its 5-1-5-1 schedule, in which students take a semester with five classes followed by a three-week "immersive" term of one class, providing for a wide range of experiential educational opportunities. It was ambitious, to say the least, and we remain one of very few high schools in the United States with such a program. But you know us—we’re always evolving, and our students continue to show us how we can improve and be more responsive to the world they will enter.

In fall 2023 we launched a strategic design process to help us set a course for the future. Among the topics our diverse committee is exploring:

  • Expanding our commitment to experiential and place-based education
  • Expanding our civic and community engagement
  • How to best tend to the health and well-being of teens
  • Assessment methods that support student growth and skills mastery
  • Evolving our educational programs to meet current student needs and interests
  • Ensuring that Bay remains a place for staffulty to grow and thrive

One of the challenges we face at Bay is that we sometimes have just too many ideas, we see too many possibilities for where to head next. The design process will help us focus in on the areas where we can make the greatest impact and help more generations of students unlock their individual and collective potential.

There will be opportunities to both celebrate the milestone of our 20th and help us realize our vision for the future. We hope you’ll join us along the way.
