Ben Cullen - Humanities
B.A., English Literature, UC Berkeley
Ph.D, American Literature
Ben’s alma mater is UC Berkeley, where he earned first a BA in English Literature and then advanced to PhD candidacy with concentrations in nineteenth and twentieth century American literature. He began his career as a high school English teacher at Bentley’s Upper School in Lafayette, California. There, he and his students pursued subjects ranging from knitting and Dungeons and Dragons to critical theory and race in American literature. He has also been an enthusiastic advocate for social justice projects throughout the Bay Area, and he’s organized both students and teachers in clubs, programs, symposiums, and exercises that engage all in the daily work of being better humans. He is joining Bay’s Humanities department this year and is thrilled to be returning to his hometown of San Francisco. When Ben is not diving into books, he can be found at REI planning his next through-hike, at Piedmont Yarn buying yarn for the scarf he’s set on making, or loafing in the sunshine on the shores of Lake Merritt.
