Lise Shelton - Associate Head of School
B.A., History and Chinese Studies, Wellesley College
Lise joined The Bay School in fall 2011 as Dean of Faculty, bringing more than 20 years of school experience gained at a broad range of institutions including Valley Torah yeshiva in LA, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Deerfield Academy and San Francisco University High School. In addition to teaching core history and literature courses to 7th-grade through college students, she has developed integrated humanities curricula and electives in religion, philosophy, sociology and psychology. Beyond the classroom, Lise has coached both boys and girls varsity athletic teams, served as multicultural dean in two schools and directed Summerbridge San Francisco. In 2000, Lise was invited to become one of the founders of Sonoma Academy, an independent high school in Santa Rosa. As founding Director of Admission and, later, as Academic Dean and College Counselor, she experienced both the tremendous satisfaction and the many challenges involved in launching a school. Collaborating with visionary, dedicated educators to create a school helped Lise realize her passion for coaching faculty, a skill she developed further in her executive coaching with nonprofit directors, young professionals, and corporate teams. Her joy in working with teachers is the same joy she has in working with students; she loves helping to cultivate mastery of skill and vitality of voice. In addition to her role as Dean of Faculty at The Bay School, she teaches history and religion courses. Lise adores dogs, travel, cooking and humorous footwear.
