Enthusiasm runs high for clubs and extra-curricular activities at Bay. A majority of students participate in one or more club organizations which include school community-focused groups such as the Student Life Committee (student council), Unity Club, Social Events Club, and literary journal and yearbook committee; arts and musical groups involving instrumental and dance performance; the Outing Club, which sponsors outdoor adventures and wilderness training; and clubs that support student interests and community service initiatives, such as the Model UN, engineering, fantasy gaming, and journalism clubs, the Eco Club, and more.

Club meeting times are scheduled during the academic day each week. In addition, the groups may meet in the evenings and on weekends. Each club is supported by one or more members of the faculty or staff who serve as advisors and mentors. Clubs are organized and run by their student members. Students are encouraged to propose ideas and build support for new clubs; thus the selection of clubs varies from one academic year to the next. Participating in club activities is a great way to both pursue a passion and become better informed, as well as build close relationships with fellow students and teachers.
Bay Space Club (Mondays) – Craig Butz, Advisor
Having successfully launched two high-altitude balloon payloads to the edge of space,
the Bay Space Club is thinking big for upcoming missions: multiple balloons, cosmic ray
detection, rockets, building and programming our own flight computers... This fall, we
will meet on Mondays, with expanded meeting times in the winter as we prepare for
Ikaros III (and IV?) in the spring. Join the only Bay School club that is literally out of this
world.
Chess Club (Fridays) – Robin Cunningham, Advisor
The purpose of the Chess Club is to provide a gathering place for playing chess and
learning about chess. Casual and serious players are all welcome! Our advisor is a
FIDE Master and will be happy to help casual and serious players improve their play if
they are interested. Eventually, we hope to develop a Bay School chess team. So if you
have a passing interest in chess or even if you are a serious player, please come join us
in the Great Room during Friday club meeting times! The club furthers the Bay School’s
mission by encouraging intellectual curiosity and by providing a forum for community focus
and good humor.
Community Service Action (Mondays) – Ellen Greenblatt and Holly Hirshfield, Advisors
Because many students who want to serve the community are also interested in other
clubs, Community Service Action is a project-based club. Club members may join as “affiliates,”
which means that they want to participate in one or some of our projects even though they
might be committed to attending the meetings of other clubs. For example, some people will
want to join in the Swim-A-Mile, One Warm Coat or the Food Drive, while others will participate
in ongoing projects like First Graduate. Community Service Action will partner with other clubs,
for example Eco Club or Amnesty, to address the needs in the local as well as in the larger community.
Some of our proposed projects at present are:
Swim-A-Mile
One Warm Coat
Food Drive
Cooking with younger kids
Volunteering at local soup kitchens
Operation Shoe Box
Pairing with Eco-club on activities
Pairing with Amnesty International Club on write-a-thons
Cosmic Ray Muons (Monday and Friday) – Richard Piccioni, Advisor
This club is focused on redesigning the Bay School's QuarkNet cosmic ray muon
detectors to investigate ultra high-energy subatomic particles of possibly extra-gallactic
origin after they strike the Earth's upper atmosphere (http://www18.i2u2.org/elab/cosmic/home/project.jsp).
We will be sharing the data we obtain with people operating a network of similar detectors in high
schools and universities across the US and relating our findings to those obtained by much larger
detector arrays such as the Pierre Auger Observatory in Argentina.
Creative Genius Club (Mondays and Fridays) – Ascha Drake, Advisor
This will be a relaxing art club, where artists can have a space to draw, paint, make
jewelry and otherwise express themselves. Each week we’ll have a prompt or concept
that can be used for inspiration. People can learn and expand their artistic boundaries
through critique and art discussions, all the while having fun, listening to music and
stacking on peanut butter filled pretzels. The Creative Genius Club will provide an
environment for artists and those interested in learning to draw or paint. Students at
Bay greatly benefit from this club because it brings out the creative genius in each of us.
Debate and Speech Club - Pam Snellgrove, Advisor
This club focuses on developing the debating and presentation skills of its members.
Debate is an area that requires proficiency in many areas in order to be successful,
including public speaking, organization, efficient and inventive thought process, arguing
a point, listening, and general presentation. Through both impromptu and organized
debates, members will be able to develop and refine their skills as well as work on
collaborative skills in group debates. Public speaking is a skill that is required in many
aspects of one’s academic and professional careers and while the Bay School requires
students to present in a public speaking environment on a variety of occasions
throughout their Bay School career, the Debate Club offers ongoing opportunities to build
these communication skills.
Fantasy Gaming Club (Fridays) – Dennis Yang, Advisor
The Fantasy Gaming Club is a place for all sorts of fantasy-based gaming; this includes
card games such as Magic: the Gathering, Pokemon, or Yu-Gi-Oh as well as role-playing
games like Dungeons & Dragons. For anyone who doesn’t know, Magic: the Gathering is a
trading card game which is endlessly entertaining both for casual gaming with friends, or
in highly competitive play. If you want to play competitively, but don’t have extensive
experience, we have members who will be willing to teach you many important aspects
of competitive strategy.
Eco Club (Monday and Fridays) – Kari Doyle and Nettie Kelly, Advisors
The Eco Club is a fun and exciting opportunity for all Bay School students to participate in making
the Bay School a greener school and a more eco-conscious environment. Members will
have the chance to develop their own "greening" projects throughout the school year;
successful projects from last year include the Eco-Benefit Concert for the Rainforest
Action Network, Mountain Lake surveying project, and Planet Earth screenings in the
Great Room. Members of the Eco Club are also invited to special volunteer opportunities with the
National Parks Foundation. Prospective locations for this year include Muir Beach and
the Marin Headlands.
Engineering Club (Meets Mondays and Fridays) – Brad Niven, Advisor
Goals: To learn and explore engineering projects and concepts using our Project Center.
From mechanical devices to electronics and programming, the Engineering Club is the
place for any project based activities. If you are interested in how science, design and
engineering can help solve interesting and complex problems, or just wish to invent new
things and build your ideas, this club is for you!
Foodie Club (Monday) – Kari Doyle, Advisor
If you love food and care about where it comes from than this is the club for you! During
Monday club time we eat lunch and other food and discuss not only the food we love,
but the issues behind food. Food is a very powerful thing. We are what we eat, so we
talk about eating consciously. We will have cook-offs and other fun events as well. We
are all about good discussions while enjoying some yummy food.
Gay-Straight Alliance - Nic Fiszman, Advisor
The Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) is a club that meets weekly to promote tolerance and
understanding of the LGBT community. In the club we discuss recent news and events
relating to the LGBT community, and plan events, such as a showing of the film Milk on Harvey
Milk Day, Gay Day in May, and many other joyous occasions! Last June the GSA along
with lots of Bay students and teachers marched in the Gay Pride Parade. The GSA is a club
for students of all sexual orientations, meaning that you don’t have to be gay to join. The
point of GSA is to spread acceptance and have fun doing it!
Hard Rock/Classic Rock Club –Jane Uyeda, Advisor
There will be approximately 4-8 members in this club consisting of 1-2 drummers, 2-4
guitarists, 1-2 bassists! We'll rock!
Hip Hop Club – Feroze Munshi, Advisor
The club desires to have students further their exploration of hip-hop and provide them
with a musical outlet. Cyphas (freestyling) provide a freedom of thought that is not
easily found within our daily lives. Freestyling is also an important aspect of hip-hop that
hopefully will lead to written lyrics. This will provide the school with another way to let
students fully express themselves and hopefully adopt a culture that is, if not entirely,
than partially, foreign within their current lifestyle.
International Aid Club (IAC) and Amnesty Club - Nettie Kelly, Advisor
The purpose of the International Aid Club is to draw attention to the issues of the
developing world and play a small but pivotal part in rectifying them. This year we are
combining efforts with the Amnesty Club to address the needs of impoverished and
oppressed people around the world. The Amnesty sector of our club will focus on taking
action to support universal human rights through write-a-thons and petitions to international
governments. The goal of the International Aid Club, in whole, is to help people less
fortunate than ourselves through learning about other cultures and issues in other countries and
taking action. Two years ago we raised enough money to provide food to 3 families experiencing
hunger through successful fundraising for the Heifer Organization. As the club progresses, we
will hopefully interact with representatives of other countries and become more engaged in their
customs and values. Last year we organized an all-school presentation working with the group
Invisible Children. During the presentation there was a former child solder from Uganda
who shared stories about his very difficult life experiences. Working on behalf of Invisible Children,
we raised more than $3,000 to contribute to education and food programs to benefit former Ugandan
child soldiers.
Jazz Club (Mondays and Fridays) – Colin Williams, Advisor
Jazz Club is the place for advanced players to play with other advanced players. Jazz club
is also a go-to group for events that need a high-quality performing ensemble on short
notice.
Lit Mag (Mondays and Fridays) – Lori Cohen, Advisor
Our mission is to spread non-academic and entertaining writing to the Bay School
community. This club provides a creative outlet for students to artistically express themselves
through the written word, and furthers the school’s mission by fostering
communication in a variety of media employing the creative mind. We also provide
chocolate, moral support, and eternal glory to all those who consistently attend our
meetings.
Model United Nations (MUN) Club (Mondays and Fridays) – Robin Workman
and Craig Miller, Advisors
Model United Nations (MUN) Club members debate and discuss world affairs.
Moreover, active members attend college-led conferences that simulate the actual
United Nations. Playing the roles of representatives of member countries, students wrestle
with a range of international issues such as nuclear proliferation, terrorism, environmental
degradation, narco-trafficking, and border control, and negotiate real world solutions
through collaborating with other member countries. MUN Club time prepares students to
represent their delegation at the Model United Nations conferences by researching international
issues and drafting resolutions from their country’s perspective. This is a unique opportunity to
gain first-hand experience working with international relations, diplomacy, and public speaking.
Outing Club (Friday) – Katherine Riley, Advisor
The Bay School Outing Club meets on Fridays during the 1st and sometimes throughout the
2nd lunch. Club time may be spent in any of the following pursuits: hiking in the Presidio, making
delicious food, planning for upcoming trips and activities, and more.
The Outing Club sponsors 4-5
weekend trips to wilderness locations during the year. All students are invited to take part.
Our goals include:
Educating ourselves and others about the large variety of outdoor pursuits available to us
in our region as well as promoting and teaching outdoors safety and enviornmental
stewardship.
Increasing our awareness of the richness, interconnectedness, and fragility of the
natural world.
Becoming confident leaders, wise risk-takers, and responsible teammates and practicing the
self-reflection borne of challenge, interdependence, and solitude.
Social Events Haikus (Friday) – Mio Berk, Advisor
Wanna have a say?
Join the social events club.
We make Bay… So gay!
But actually,
We’re quite serious workers.
(Like the faculty)
We plan everything
Like dances and spirit days.
We like partying.
You like our haikus?
Then join our amazing crew,
And you’ll have fun too!
Sports Club (Monday and Friday) Outside on the Green Space
Advisor TBD
There are two parts to the sports Club. The first is the Fantasy leagues. We have
fantasy baseball and football leagues. The drafts occur outside of school time. On
Mondays and Fridays the members of the club will be playing different sports games out
on the grassy field. We will rotate between playing touch football, soccer and tips.
The maximum amount of people that this club can accommodate is 30 people.
Ultimate Frisbee Club (Monday and Friday) Outside on the Green Space
Tony Pickering, Advisor
The purpose of this club is to help people improve their Frisbee skills, and teach people
how to play the game of Ultimate Frisbee. This club will teach people a new skill while
promoting friendship and teambuilding. Plus, playing Frisbee is really fun!
Unity Club (Friday) – Rachel Shaw, Matt Hannibal, Vanessa Alfaro, and
Darrick Broudy,
Advisors
We intend to create a safe place for students to talk about and reflect on their identity,
particularly related to the Big 8: race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, socio-economic class,
gender, age, ability, and religion. Meetings will include activities or discussion that will
encourage us to step outside of our comfort zone. We will also explore ways to share
our experiences with the Bay community. We eat lunch together from 11:25 to 12:05
(this is optional) and then our official club time begins at 12:05.
