The Bay School of San Francisco, an independent, coeducational college preparatory high school located in the Presidio of San Francisco Programs at the Bay School of San Francisco

Clubs & Activities

Enthusiasm runs high for clubs and extra-curricular activities at Bay. A majority of students participate in one or more club organizations which include school community focused groups such as the Student Life Committee (student council),Unity Club,Social Events Club, and literary journal and yearbook committee; arts and musical groups involving instrumental and dance performance; the Outing Club, which sponsors outdoor adventures and wilderness training; and clubs that support student interests and community service initiative, such as the
Model UN, engineering, fantasy gaming, and journalism clubs, the Eco Club, and more.

Bay School of San Francisco campus information

Club meeting times are scheduled during the academic day each week. In addition, the groups may meet in the evenings and on weekends. Each club is supported by one or more members of the faculty or staff who serves as an advisors and mentors. Clubs are organized and run by their student members. Students are encouraged to propose ideas and build support for new clubs; thus the selection of clubs varies from one academic year to the next. Participating in club activities is a great way to both pursue a passion and become better informed, as well
as build close relationships with fellow students and teachers.

Student Descriptions of 2010-2011 Clubs & Activities::

a capella Club
The Bay a cappella group brings a group of 10 or so Bay School students from differenct grades
together to share the fun of learning to sing in harmony. As a current group member says, "On our
website it says 'One thing all students of The Bay School share is a deep excitement and enthusiasm
for learning in all of its forms.' This gives agroup of dedicated and talented students the chance to
share deep excitement and enthusiasm for learning vocal music." Meets on Mondays and Fridays

Amnesty Club
The mission of our club is to reach out to all corners of the word to speak up for
universal human rights. We will make a difference through a variety of actions including
write-a-thons, petitions, fundraising, and increasing awareness through speakers. Every
club meeting is guaranteed to be a lively time with snacks and meaningful discussions
about the difficulties around the world and how we can let our voices be heard. This club
will be lead by Jogreet Chadha and Sophia Lemmo as well as Nettie Kelly acting as the
club advisor. We are looking for anyone and everyone who wants to have a good time
and help change the world for the better!! Meets on Fridays

Bay Space Club
Following up on our successful launch and recovery of a near-space balloon probe as an
Intersession project in spring 2010, we are launching a new club to wrap-up up the Ikaros I
project and to plan Ikaros II. Our ultimate goal is to develop a reliable, easy-to-use
launch system that could regularly carry student experiments to the edge of outer space.
This club will meet on Mondays and develop into an Intersession course in April 2011.

BAY Students Can Use Macs
This club will meet in the Mac Lab before lunch. Students who would like access to the
Mac Lab but don’t have any classes in it are welcome provided they respect the Mac Lab
expectations. The purpose of this club is to explore the Mac OS while nurturing the brand
loyalty that some Bay Students feel for the Mac platform. Meets on Mondays.

Chess Club
The purpose of the chess club is to provide a gathering place for playing chess and
learning about chess. Casual and serious players are all welcome! One of the sponsors
is a FIDE Master and will be happy to help casual and seriousplayers improve their play if
they are interested. Eventually, we hope to develop a BaySchool Chess Team. So if you
have a passing interest in chess or even if you are a seriousplayer, please come join us
in the Great Room during Monday or Friday Club meeting times!
The club furthers the Bay School’s mission by encouraging intellectual curiosity and by
providing a forum for community focus and good humor.

Community Service Action
Because many students who want to serve their communities are also interested and involved in other
clubs and activities, this year Community Service Action will adopt a project-based approach, and will offer the
possibility of affiliate membership. Club members may join as “Affiliates,” which means that they want to
participate in some of our projects in addition to participating in the meetings and activities offered by other clubs. Our group meets on Mondays.

Community Service Action will provide opportunities for Bay School students and teachers to participate in
the larger community. Some of our proposed projects at present are:

Swim-A-Mile
One Warm Coat
Food Drive
Habitat and other Presidio-based activities.
Pairing with Eco Club on activities
?Pairing with Amnesty International Club on write-a-thons

Cosmic Robotics Club
Members will learn to assemble and operate straightforward computer-controlled optical
electro-mechanical devices. No prior experience of any kind i srequired, so learning
will be maximized. Available resources include a large inventory of Vex robotics parts,
and all the components needed to build a scintillation counter capable of detecting
subatomic particles called muons. Entering a Vex robot in regional and international
competitions is a possible outcome, and may require the raising of funds for travel
expenses. The muon detector will become part of an international network of similar
devices searching for ultra-high energy particles of cosmological origin striking the
Earth’s upper atmosphere. Another exciting possibility would be to develop a science
package for the next Bay School near-space balloon effort.

The Current
Staff writers for The Current keep the Bay School community informed about events of interest through
producing our weekly electronic newsletter distributed to students, faculty, and staff..

Dance Club
Dance Club will explore the needs and desires of the club members. Students might want
to explore different forms of dance, choreography and or performing. The club meets on Fridays.

Eco Club (Club meeting on Fridays and Environmental Reading group on Mondays)
The Eco Club is a fun and exciting opportunity for all Bay School students to participate
in making the Bay School a greener and a more eco-conscious environment.
Members will have the opportunity to develop their own "greening" projects throughout the
school year; successful projects from last year include the Eco-Benefit Concert for the
Rainforest Action Network, Mountain Lake surveying project, and Planet Earth
screenings in the Great Room.

On Mondays the Eco Club holds an environmental reading group and our group leader
guidees a discussion about popular recent ecological debates featured in the news.
Members of the Eco Club are also invited to become involved in special volunteer opportunities
sponsored by the GG National Parks Foundation. Prospective locations for this year's projects
include Muir Beach and the Marin Headlands. Meets on Mondays and Fridays.

Fantasy Gaming Club
The Fantasy Gaming Club is a place for all sorts of fantasy-based gaming; this includes
card games such as Magic: the Gathering, Pokemon, or Yu-Gi-Oh as well as role-playing
games like Dungeons & Dragons. While we mostly play Magic: the Gathering, any other game
which can be played in 30 minutes will be considered.. For anyone who doesn’t know,
Magic: the Gathering is a trading card game which is endlessly entertaining both for casual
gaming with friends, or for highly competitive play. If you want to play competitively, but don’t
have extensive experience, we have members who will be willing to teach you many important aspects
of competitive Magic strategy. Meets on Fridays.

Gay-Straight Alliance
The Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) is a club that meets weekly to promote tolerance and
understanding of the LGBT community. In the club, we discuss recent news and events
relating to the LGBT community, and plan events, such as a showing of Milk on Harvey
Milk Day, Gay Day in May, and many other joyous occasions! Last June the GSA along
with lots of Bay students and faculty marched in the Gay Pride Parade. The GSA is a club
for students of all sexual orientation, meaning that you don’t have to be gay to join.
The point of GSA is to spread acceptance and have fun doing it! Meets on Fridays.

I Love Books Club
Do you like to read for fun but can’t find the time? This club is for students who want to
curl up with a good book and read for 30 minutes on Mondays. We will also discuss
books and authors and share book recommendations. Committed members will receive
such perks as free books, bookmarks, and author field trips.
