What are Possible Solutions to Global Warming? |

If we were to use energy more efficiently and start using renewable energy, such as wind, solar, geothermal, and bioenergy, we could reduce the release of heat-trapping gases. Cars and trucks are a large contributor to CO2 emissions. Switching vehicles to alternative fuels such as natural gas and hydrogen will greatly decrease the greenhouse gas emissions around the world. Governments need to encourage the use of alternative fuels, such as solar and wind power, by providing tax credits to individuals and businesses. Paul Craig, who is a member of the Sierra Club’s Global Warming and Clean Energy Committee, said that there are a lot of things that could be done to solve the problem of global warming. Craig personally likes Plug-In-Hybrid-Electric-Vehicle (PHEVs) and he has written an OpEd on the topic of PHEVs. In his piece of writing Craig explains how PHEVs are similar to today’s hybrid. However, PHEV has a larger battery and a smaller engine. The battery can run for about 50 miles, which is the average distance a driver goes in a day. If you want to take a longer trip, you can fill up the engine with either gasoline or diesel and it will run for as long as a regular gasoline powered car would. In the United States, if the “fleet of cars and light trucks were replaced by PHEVs” (Paul Craig) we would save about eight million barrels of oil per day.
