Bay School Coaches

Bay School student athletes have the opportunity to be trained by a coaching staff of the highest caliber—comprised of lifelong athletes who are experienced, ethical, and enthusiastic. Several of our coachese have both coached and competed on the high school, university, and professional levels. Many of them also teach academic disciplines; thus, students and teachers have the opportunity to build upon bonds that have been forged in the classroom.

Steve Glass – Director of Athletics
Steve joined the Bay School as its founding athletic director in 2004, after twelve years as athletic director and physical education teacher at Cathedral School for Boys in San Francisco. While at Cathedral, Steve was recognized by Johns Hopkins University with an award for exemplary teaching and coaching. He also received a lifetime achievement award from the California Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (CAHPERD).

Prior to his tenure at CSB, he held the position of sports coordinator for adult and youth programs at the Stonestown YMCA in San Francisco. Steve grew up in Santa Cruz and attended Santa Cruz High School, where he lettered in varsity basketball and baseball for three years and received all-league and all-conference honors in basketball and baseball. After high school Steve attended San Francisco University, where he played shortstop on the varsity baseball team for four years and was selected for the all-Western Region U.S. baseball team in 1985.

Following graduation, Steve began his professional baseball career when he was drafted by the Atlanta Braves. He was selected for the Mid-West All Star team in 1988. After receiving a career-ending knee injury, Steve was retained by the Braves as a coach for two years under the leadership of Ned Yost and Jimy Williams. In October of 2004 Steve was inducted into the San Francisco State University Athletic Hall of Fame.

Stephanie Hamilton – Assistant Director of Athletics
Stephanie Hamilton joined the Bay School in the fall of 2006. She assists the athletic director, supervises scheduling, hosts home games, and administers the school's physical activity program.

Prior to her position at Bay, Stephanie worked as an assistant coach at Los Gatos High School, where she worked with elite middle distance and cross-country runners. She also coached at several upper-level cross-country camps while attending college at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo.

Stephanie began her running career very early in her life, and placed third in the California State Track & Field Championships in the 800 meters as a senior at Los Gatos High School. After high school, Stephanie received a full athletic scholarship to Tulane University, where she ran for one year before transferring to Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. At Cal Poly, she competed in cross-country and track & field, where she ran a personal record of 2:06 in the 800 meters. Stephanie graduated with a B.S. in psychology in June of 2002.

Shellie Banks – Head Coach, Cross-Country, Track & Field
Shellie Banks brings more than ten years of coaching experience to the Bay School as the head cross-country and track & field coach. Shellie began coaching youth track & field in 1977 while attending Ohio State University, where she was a member of the Ohio State track & field team, competing as a sprinter during the indoor and the outdoor seasons. Shellie also spent three summers coaching track & field with the National Youth Sports Programs (NYSP) at Ohio State University and assisted the Capitol City Comets youth track club.

In 1992 Shellie accepted the position of head cross-country and track & field coach at Pacific Hills School in Southern California where she remained for seven years until she was recruited to head the track & field program at Chadwick School in Palos Verdes, California, where she served for five years prior to joining the faculty at the Bay School, where she teaches Spanish and French.

As a dedicated athlete herself, Shellie has continued running since graduating from Ohio State University. In 1992 she began competing as a Masters athlete for the United States. During her eight years of competition, she won a national title, was selected as a member of the U.S. 4x100 and 4x400 meter teams, and participated in national and international competitions throughout the U.S., Puerto Rico, Europe, and South Africa. Shellie's goal is to create and establish a strong cross-country and track & field program that fosters comradery, commitment, consistency in training, and competitiveness.

Matt Hannibal – Head Coach, Boys' Varsity Soccer
Matt Hannibal joined the faculty of the Bay School in 2003 and currently works as Freshman Dean and Associate Director of College Counseling. Prior to working at the Bay School, Matt taught fourth grade at Presidio Hill School in San Francisco and sixth grade at Kent Denver School in Colorado, where he also coached JV soccer and middle school lacrosse.

While majoring in Religious Studies at Brown University, Matt began coaching soccer at Moses Brown, a K-12 school in Providence, RI. During his four years in Rhode Island, Matt coached elementary, middle school, and varsity soccer teams. For the past three years, he has worked to develop the boys' soccer program at Bay. The 2006 season was highlighted by the Bay School's first-ever competition in the BCL Central semi-finals.

Dennis Hartzell – Head Coach, Boys' Varsity Basketball
Dennis Hartzell heads the boys' basketball program at Bay and offers a martial arts course as part of the school's physical activities program. As Assistant Head of School and a member of the Bay School faculty, he teaches junior and senior level English electives.

Dennis' coaching experience includes nine years (1974-83) at independent schools on the east coast, where he coached soccer, basketball, and tennis. From 1983 to 1987, Dennis served as the first assistant at two Division I college basketball programs; he spent one year at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA and three years at Columbia University in New York City.

Since relocating to San Francisco in 1989, Dennis has coached extensively in youth basketball programs sponsored by the YMCA and the JCC. One of his principle reasons for joining the Bay School as a founding faculty member in 2003 was the opportunity to develop and sustain a basketball program committed to the highest standards of individual growth and competitive integrity.

Cassie McKeown – Head Coach, Girls' JV Volleyball
Cassie was born and raised in Saint Louis, Missouri (Go Cardinals!). Throughout her four years in high school, She played volleyball, basketball, and softball. During her senior year, Cassie began her first coaching endeavor by creating her own club volleyball team. She continued to coach the club for the next three years, while also coaching one season of girls' lacrosse.

Cassie then attended Webster University in Saint Louis and played volleyball there for three years. Before her fourth year as a Gorlock volleyball player, a coaching opportunity opened up at a local high school, and she made the difficult decision to stop playing volleyball and begin coaching instead. During the next few years Cassie coached varsity volleyball and freshman basketball while finishing up her own undergraduate education. With a degree in both Secondary Education and English Literature, she moved to San Francisco to seek new challenges. Cassie is currently teaching seventh and eleventh grade English and Social Studies[p1] at Cornerstone Academy, as well as coaching for the Breakers.

Ryan O'Connor – Head Coach, Boys' JV Basketball
A native of Massachusetts and graduate of The University of North Carolina, Ryan is a young and determined coach. Prior to moving to San Francisco, he taught freshman English at Wm J. Dean Vocational Tech High School. Ryan is a lifelong basketball enthusiast who began his coaching career at the high school level, and is excited to begin his coaching position at Bay, where he will lead the boys' junior varsity team.

Jim Scrivano – Head Coach, Girls' Varsity Volleyball
Jim has served as the head volleyball coach at the Bay School since 2005. The 2005 girls' JV team recorded the program's first ever winning record, and the 2006 Varsity team was co-Champion of the BCL Central and advanced to CIF Sectionals in its first year of play.

Jim held his first head coaching position when he was 18, and has since coached for several clubs and high schools, including competitive programs at Harvard-Westlake High School and the Brentwood School in the L.A. area. As a player, he was a three-time qualifier for the volleyball Junior Nationals in high school, and the starting opposite for the 1997 NCVA championship team. He then played for the Northwestern University men's volleyball team, while studying for his bachelor's degree in film and art history.

George Sigigie – Head Coach, Girls' Golf
George was born and raised in the Bay Area and is a graduate of Serra High School in San Mateo. He worked for four years as a member of the Menlo Country Club golf staff where he mastered instructional methods and assisted the head professional in running the club's summer youth golf clinics. George also has extensive experience as a caddy, having worked for golf professionals and amateurs during golf tournaments across the country, including U.S. Open qualifiers, the U.S. Amateur, and the Pacific Coast Amateur.
