1-to-1 Laptops and Technology

Technology is no longer a subject area discrete from other academic disciplines.

 

Preparing our students for a complex and dynamic world means teaching them to use advanced technology in the way adult professionals do: to execute challenging tasks, communicate sophisticated ideas, and devise solutions for novel problems. And it is not enough to teach them how to use technology: they must also consider the social, cultural, ethical, and political ramifications of its use.

Technology supports and enhances learning across all disciplines, as well as fosters communication, collaboration, and creation. As part of our one-to-one laptop program—covered within our inclusive tuition model—we issue a laptop to every student; incoming 9th graders have their choice of a Mac or PC. 

In every class throughout our curriculum, students complete classwork and homework on laptops equipped with the same high-level software found in studios, workshops, and workplaces around the world.

If you can perform a task in your workplace, chances are your child can do it on their Bay laptop. In our dual-platform school, these machines are supplemented by our media lab, featuring fully loaded multimedia Mac workstations for use in any number of creative endeavors.


A Tech-Supported Curriculum  

Technology is an important tool in the work of clubs, electives, and Immersive courses, where students may find themselves launching near-space weather balloons or underwater remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), designing a supercomputer, or exploring a niche of mathematics. Specialized skills are taught in courses such as:

  • Digital Imaging
  • Video Production
  • Electronic Music Studio
  • Robotics
  • Biotechnology

Student Involvement 

In Bay’s MARMOT program, students serve as volunteers in our technology support department, learning network administration and support skills while helping to keep Bay’s computer networks running at peak performance. Students are given a great deal of responsibility as MARMOTs, and they learn a lot in the process.
