Job Description

The Bay School Science program employs a pedagogical approach that incorporates inquiry-based practice and real-world applications. We strongly value student experimental design, data-driven argumentation, and designing curricula that empower all students to see themselves as scientists. We are looking for a science teacher who has a strong commitment to innovative curricular and experimental design, progressive pedagogy, and social justice--all in service of student learning and growth.

Our science program begins with physics first in the ninth grade, followed by tenth-grade chemistry and eleventh-grade biology. In addition, we offer second-exposure, advanced courses in physics, chemistry, and biology, as well as a variety of electives, including biopsychology, astronomy, climate change, fire ecology, and California geology, among others. Block periods allow students to delve deeply into rich problem-based and inquiry-based learning across courses. Teachers of our core courses have a common prep block and use it to work collaboratively to ensure alignment of curriculum between sections/teachers. 

Full-time teachers are responsible for teaching nine courses per year including at least one immersive. Each semester-long class meets three times a week in a rotating block schedule. Each immersive course meets daily for three weeks from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., with the potential for field trips and experiential learning that extend beyond the traditional school day. 

Key Responsibilities

Teaching
In addition to class preparation and classroom teaching, all teachers are responsible for:

  • Collaboratively designing curriculum and aligning curriculum with course teams, the department goals, and the school's mission;
  • Designing skills-based formative and summative assessments;
  • Grading student work and providing feedback in a timely manner;
  • Communicating regularly with students, parents, guardians, and advisors regarding student progress;
  • Having one-on-one student meetings during tutorial period or as needed when on campus;
  • Scheduling and attending course team meetings;
  • Attending weekly staffulty or department meetings on Tuesday afternoons when applicable.

Advising
All full-time teaching staffulty serve as advisors to a group of 8-10 students. This includes:

  • Meeting as a group with the advisory once per week for 25 minutes;
  • Attending and chaperoning additional grade-level events and special events;
  • Participating in grade-level orientation before the first day of class;
  • Serving as the primary point person with the school for parents/guardians.

Community Support
All teaching staffulty are expected to support the well-being of our community and the growth of individual students. This includes:

  • Attending Morning Meeting three days a week;
  • Monitoring a "Flex" block (study hall) one block per week each semester;
  • Holding Tutorial at the end of the school day four days a week;
  • Modeling community engagement by being present throughout the school day, serving as a club leader, serving on committees and participating in admissions events (as examples);
  • Attending Back to School Night in September
  • Supporting the admissions program by attending a limited number of admissions events.

Requirements

  • EDUCATION: A four-year undergraduate degree in biology or a related field
  • EXPERIENCE: Applicants should ideally have at least 3+ years of teaching experience, although candidates with fewer years of experience will also be considered
  • COMPUTER SKILLS: Proficient in Google Suite and familiarity with PC and Mac platforms and LMS and SMS systems

Job offers are contingent upon clear LiveScan fingerprinting and TB risk assessment. Other requirements include completing first aid/CPR training, mandated reporter training, anti-harassment training, and bloodborne pathogen training. Access to these mandatory trainings are provided and paid for by the school.

Compensation

Salary is based on years of secondary school work or relevant experience. The faculty salary range for the 2023-24 school year is $84,684 to $140,202. Bay also offers a strong benefits package for long term employees working at least 60% full time.

Block periods allow students to delve deeply into rich problem- and inquiry-based learning across all courses. Our math teachers have a strong commitment to innovative curricular design, progressive pedagogy, and social justice--all in service of student learning and growth. Teachers of our core courses have a common prep block and use it to work collaboratively to ensure alignment of curriculum between sections/teachers.

Instructors are responsible for teaching nine courses per year. This load can be dispersed as four courses each semester, coupled with one three-week Immersive course in the winter or the spring OR three (or four) courses in one semester, two three-week Immersives, and four (or three) courses in another semester. Each semester-long class meets three times a week in a rotating block schedule. Faculty are expected to be present on campus for their first obligation of the day, which will generally occur at 8:25 a.m. each school or faculty-work day, and remain on campus until the school day and their work obligations are finished, which will be anytime from 2:30-4:30 p.m., depending on the class and meeting schedules. Each Immersive course meets daily for three weeks from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., with the potential for field trips and experiential learning that extend beyond the traditional school day.

The Bay School of San Francisco seeks an experienced, collaborative, and innovative Dean of Diversity, Equity and Belonging (DEB). The Dean of DEB holds a key senior leadership role, reporting to the Head of School, sitting on the 7-member Educational Leadership Team, and working strategically and collaboratively to advance and sustain the school’s mission-aligned and active commitment to diversity, equity, belonging, and anti-racism.

The Dean of DEB’s primary responsibilities will include leading the faculty and staff to ensure that our educational programs and institutional policies and practices support diversity, equity, belonging and anti-racism; developing a multi-year plan to build capacity among faculty, staff and students to engage in best practices to support belonging; communicating Bay’s DEB vision, plans and practices in a variety of settings; supporting school affinity groups and DEB groups;  managing the change efforts aimed at continuing to build an equitable and inclusive community, including developing metrics to determine progress.

The right person for this role will have experience creating meaningful, mission-aligned content, programs and industry-leading policies all of which operationalize DEB into decision-making and systems.

Job Description

The Associate Director of Annual Giving is an important member of the Advancement Office, working in partnership with the Director of Advancement to navigate the constantly changing landscape of philanthropy to ensure that Bay's fundraising practices are aligned with the mission, precepts and vision of the school.

This position works with the Director of Advancement and the entire Advancement team to develop and implement strategies for the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of donors to The Bay School's Annual Fund.

Key Responsibilities

Annual Fund

  • In partnership with the Director of Advancement, drives all aspects of Bay's Annual Fund program, including segmentation, messaging, and collateral;
  • Helps establish and achieve long-term financial goals for the Annual Fund, actively reporting on the progress and outcomes of these goals;
  • Works with the Head of School, select members of the Board of Trustees, The Bay Family Association, and lead volunteers to achieve revenue and operational goals on behalf of the department;
  • Works closely with the Bay Family Association and Bay Senior Leaders to create a vibrant culture of parent engagement by recruiting, training, managing, and celebrating a broad range of volunteers, including a robust parent Annual Fund volunteer committee;
  • Prepares all Annual Fund solicitation materials and leads all volunteer solicitor training;
  • With the Director of Advancement, begins to lay the foundation for a successful Alumni Giving program. Works to develop more robust communications, solicitations, and alumni involvement in the philanthropic life of the school;
  • Coordinates cultivation and stewardship plans for Annual Fund donors and volunteers;
  • Potential to own a portfolio of mid-level donors.

Gift Acknowledgement and Reporting

  • Monitors and reports program results and conducts ongoing analysis and evaluation of solicitation programs;
  • Creates and maintains reports on AF progress that reconciles with department databases and allows volunteers and Bay team members move ahead confidently with cultivation and solicitation of donor prospects;
  • Writes thank you notes for all AF gifts under $5K.

Special Events/Volunteer Support/Community Engagement

  • Works with the Special Events Coordinator, supports all Advancement-sponsored events as needed, including Opening Day Coffee, New Parent/Guardian Dinner, Graduation, College Parents' Care Packages Assembly, Grandfriends Day, donor and volunteer appreciation events, Bay Splash, etc.
  • Attends Advancement and other school events and is a visible and engaged community member;
  • Actively engages with Bay staffulty and may become a member of staffulty committees.
