Affording a Bay School Education
Paramount to the school’s mission, and that of the Board of Trustees, is a commitment to a socio-economically diverse student body. It is the Board’s earnest intent that no student accepted to the school be disqualified for financial reasons. To fulfill this commitment, the school maintains a strong need-based financial aid program. Financial aid decisions are made independent of admission decisions and in no way affect a candidate’s chances for admission.
The Bay School of San Francisco encourages families to apply for financial aid if they think they may qualify. The Bay School is committed to maintaining a socio-economically diverse student body. More than 30% of Bay School students receive financial aid awards.
Who is Eligible?
In order to calculate eligibility for financial aid, the Admission Office will provide a Parent Financial Statement (PFS) application upon request. This form should be submitted to the School and Student Service (SSS) for Financial Aid in Princeton, New Jersey, no later than Friday, January 29, 2010. This allows for an award decision to be sent out along with the admission decision. Copies of the family’s 2009 tax return forms are due to the Bay School Business Office by February 26, 2010—please note: it is important that tax returns are filed early in order to be eligible for a financial aid award. An application for financial aid does not affect a student's admission decision. Unfortunately, the school is not able to provide every deserving student with financial aid, thus it is possible that a student may be admitted to the Bay School but placed on the waitlist for financial aid.
How is Income Defined?
Income is determined by the pre-tax income from wages, other business income, and investments. The formula takes into account costs against the income such as educational and other expenses. However the IRS does not use the same factors to calculate taxable income, so all data must be submitted to both the SSS and the Bay School. The formula also takes into consideration major assets, savings and/or investments. All independent high schools in the Bay Area use the same financial aid forms, thus the information only needs to be submitted to the SSS once.
What Factors Affect the Financial Aid Award?
A number of different factors may affect the eligibility and the amount of a financial aid grant. Such factors include the size of the family, incidental costs, and whether or not the parents are divorced, separated or never married. In the cases of family size and incidental costs, financial aid packages are adjusted accordingly. If parents are divorced, separated, or were never married, we will need both parents’ income tax information. In the event of one of the parents not being accessible, a written explanation should be sent to the Admission Office.
Non-Discrimination Policy
The Bay School of San Francisco admits students of any race, color, religion, national and ethnic origin, or handicap to all the rights, privileges, programs and activities of the school. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sexual orientation, national or ethnic origin in administration of its educational policies, scholarship programs, athletic and other school administered programs.
