The Fulbright Library

The Bay School's Fulbright Library is a favorite spot on campus and ground zero for educational resources. Utilized and enjoyed by all members of the school community, the spacious 3,000 square foot library houses more than ten thousand books, books on CDs, and DVDs. In addition to providing an online library catalog, the library also subscribes to more than twenty-five databases including access to thousands of eBooks.

The mission of the library is to provide information in a variety of media, to teach the tools for using that information effectively and ethically, to promote reading for pleasure, and to provide a space that is warm and inviting, encouraging the flow of intellectual curiosity and discourse.

Rachel Shaw, Librarian

The spacious, well-lighted library layout provides comfortable study spaces for groups engaged in project work as well as cozy, quiet spaces for individual students to read, do homework, and relax. A separate periodical reading room,  known affectionately as the ”Room with the Comfy Chairs”  offers a welcoming space in which to leaf through the school’s collection of more than 80 magazines and newspapers. Students come together at the many square tables to collaborate on problem sets and edit each other’s work. Bay’s much beloved full- time librarian is on-hand to assist students with finding books and other resources, using the databases and reference materials, or just to chat. Teachers often bring their students to the library during class time to browse through the poetry section in Writing Workshop, find an historic photograph in Digital Imaging, or do research in US History and Humanities I and II.

The library collection offers special resources for parents and teachers. A foreign language section includes books and DVDs in Spanish, French, and Mandarin Chinese. There are also special collections that include African history, 20th century American poetry, and teen fiction. Utilizing a self-checkout computer system, students and faculty members have full access to library materials during the entire school day and are able to use on-site computers and scanners to transfer copies of documents directly onto their laptops. Parents are also welcome to use the library and take advantage of the large collection of parenting resources.
